Hadimba Devi Temple which is also known as Dhungri Temple. This temple is located in Manali, Himachal Pradesh and surrounded by dense forests. The temple is dedicated to Hadimba Devi and is an architectural wonder constructed in 1553 by Maharaja Bahadur Singh. The pagoda-style temple with wooden outer carvings is a sight to see for pilgrims and tourists alike.

Who is Hadimba Devi?

Hadimba Devi was a Mahabharata temper demoness. She was sister of demon king Hidimb, the master of dark Himalayan forests. Had Pandavas been exiled, Bhima met Hidimb and slew him in a very tough fight. Hadimba lost to Bhima's courage and toughness and agreed to marry him.

Though a demoness (Rakshasi) at birth, Hadimba was filled with godly qualities. She also had a son, Ghatotkacha who was a great warrior and a principal warrior of the war of Kurukshetra. Having fulfilled her purpose in the world, Hadimba renounced worldly life and practiced intense meditation within the woods of Manali. Time, dedication and ascetic life she spent influenced the natives to regard her as a goddess.
